Which size do you actually need?

Most people buy a ladder one size too small, then end up on the top step reaching anyway — which is exactly where accidents happen. Buy for the highest job in your house, not the average one.

What to check before you buy any step ladder

Load rating, not just your weight. A 150kg rating has to carry you plus a paint can, a toolbox, or a box coming down from the loft. If the rating only just covers your body weight, it is the wrong ladder.

Step width. Narrow steps are what make a ladder feel unsafe. Wide, anti-slip pedals let you stand flat-footed and work with both hands instead of gripping for balance.

A lock that actually locks. A folding ladder without a positive locking mechanism can creep closed under load. Check for a lock that clicks and holds.

Rubber feet. Two jobs — grip on tile or marble, and no scratches on your floor. Bare metal feet slide on polished surfaces, which is the most common way a step ladder goes over indoors.
